Defining Nursing

It may be suprising to learn tht finding a universally aceptable definition of turning has been an elusive goal. It seems that even nurses themselves have been unable to agree on one definition. Individuals, including the venerable Nightingale, and organizations such a5 the Intemational Council of Nurses (ICN) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) have made attempts to achieve consensus, some more suoceseful than others. In spite ofthe inability of those in the profession to agree on one definition, most of the definitions have similar themes. Considering the variations in knowledge and technology during the diferent points in history when these definitions were writen, the similarities are remarkable. All the definitions were impacted by significant political and social events of the day that shaped the form of nursing as it is aon own, ‘Having an accepted definition of nursing is helpful in a variety of ways and provides a framework for nursing practice. It establishes the parameters ‘or boundaries of the profession, identifies the purposes and functions of the work, and guides the educational preparation of aspiring prationers Definitions are a good place to begin in attempting to understand any complex entity The Evolution of Definitions of Nursing During Nightingale’s day, formal schooling in nursing was just beginning. Tn writing Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not in 1859, she became the first person to attempt a definition of nursing, She wrote, “And what nursing has todo is put the patent in the best condition for nature to act upon him (Nightingale 1946, p. 75).” She also wrote:

I Use the word nursing for want of a better. It has been limited to sigaify little more than the administration of medicines and the application of poultices.
